The Einstein Camera

A century ago, a U of T astronomer led a small group of Canadians on a daring expedition to Australia to test Einstein’s Theory of General Relativity. Read my feature for U of T Magazine, co-authored with Victoria Fisher.

For Chant, it would be the trip of a lifetime, requiring months of planning and specialized equipment. This included the so-called “Einstein camera” – a telescope, essentially, with a specially-made six-inch-diameter lens at one end and a photographic plate at the other.
