The idea of multiple universes — that the universe we see around us is just one of many — is one of the most controversial in all of physics. Could it be more than science fiction?
Inflationary cosmology, string theory, quantum mechanics — what do these varied arguments for the multiverse add up to? For some, the fact that more than one pathway seems to point to multiple universes is suggestive. As Siegfried put it: “Whether there’s a multiverse or not does not hinge on any one theory being right or wrong. There are different possible ways there could be a multiverse – and we don’t know if any of them are correct… But we have reasons to take some of these ideas seriously.”
